The Guardian Reports,

“Macaulay Culkin has formed a pizza-related Velvet Underground tribute band.

Billed as Pizza Underground, the group brings together Culkin and four musicians from New York’s anti-folk scene: Matt Colbourn, Phoebe Kreutz, Deenah Vollmer and Austin Kilham. Some 23 years after he starred in Home Alone, Culkin is credited with “percussion/kazoo/vocals”.

Last week, the band released their debut: a demo tape featuring treasures such as I’m Waiting for Delivery Man and All the Pizza Parties. One highlight is the melancholy ballad Cheese Days, a take on These Days. “Cheese days,” they sing, in tremulous strains. “I don’t do too much toppings these days / [These] days I seem to order cheese, and don’t say please, and then I walk away.” Look out for Culkin’s kazoo solo on Take a Bite of the Wild Slice.

Formed in February 2012, the Pizza Underground have performed recent gigs at Comic Arts Brooklyn and in early November, for a Lou Reed tribute show at anti-folk landmark the Sidewalk Cafe. Culkin’s prior musical resume consists of cameos in music videos, including work with anti-folk icon Adam Green. From Green it is only a small hop to Kreutz, described by the New Yorker as “kingpin of the joke-folk genre”.

The Pizza Underground’s demo was recorded “live at Macaulay Culkin’s house” in November 2013. No album has yet been promised.”
